‘Penny Dreadful’ episode 5 will focus more on Ethan’s story as opposed to Vanessa’s. Entitled “The World Is Our Hell”, the incoming episode will depict Ethan and Hecate’s struggle for survival in a harsh desert Wasteland.
Season 3 is currently doing a great job at isolating the major characters to fight off their own inner demons and face their own tumultuous lives. According to Carter Matt, the incoming episode will focus on Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) and Evelyn Poole’s daughter, Hecate (Sarah Green), who find themselves travelling through a barren desert as they struggle to survive.
The promo for “The World Is Our Hell” opened to Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) performing a yet another gruesome experiment on a new test subject. In the next scene, Hecate asks Ethan the reason behind his estranged father’s seemingly desperate attempt at sending men to hunt him down. Ethan then reveals that his father, Jared Talbot (Brian Cox), wants him to take responsibility for things he’s done in the past.
Ethan then goes on to explain that he betrayed his family and murdered his friend while vowing to put an end to his father by “sending him to hell”. The last few scenes show more debauchery occurring in the desert.
Showrunner and writer John Logan revealed in a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly that he intended to delve deeper into Ethan’s mysterious history while adding a little bit of the classic Western feel to the mix. He said, “I’ve always just loved Westerns, and I’ve always known, from the beginning of the series, that I wanted to take Ethan back home for a final reckoning with his demonic father, who Brian Cox plays later in the season, brilliantly.”
He added, “It’s a real reckoning for Ethan this season. I always planned the character in the third season to go back and try to grapple with his demons, and his demons have to do with the past. They have to do with his father, the way he was raised, what happened to him in the past that made him this dark character, how he became a werewolf — all of those things are the issues that have been sort of looming over the character.”
‘Penny Dreadful’ season 3, episode 5 is scheduled to premiere on May 29 on Showtime. The British-American horror drama features various characters from 19th-century British and Irish fiction such as Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, Dr. Jekyll, and Van Helsing.
